§R405, Foundation Drainage and Soil Classification

Per §R405 foundations that retain earth and enclose usable or habitable space below grade are to have a foundation drainage system to keep liquid water from entering the building or accumulating against foundation materials that may be damaged by prolonged exposure to moisture. There are varying requirements for different foundation wall materials as shown in the illustrations. For wood foundations see Figures R403.1(2) and R403.1(3). We have called out the drainage pipes as 4” (102) in diameter per the plumbing requirements for subsoil drains in §P3302.1.
